“Petronio Vilela is one of the biggest supporters of the Brazilian Skate! He was one of the leading photographers of the sport in the country in the 80s, and is responsible for conducting the nostalgic and important Brazilian Championships in Itaguará Country Club, in Guaratinguetá, between 1981 and 1987, along with the team Super Dog. Thanks to him, a whole generation of skateboarders national had their pictures published in the main journals of that time and can present the most anticipated event of the year. It was also the first photographer to face a big tour in Brazil spending days by clicking the skaters and northeastern slopes, in a pioneering work today by reminding practitioners of the region. His pioneering went ahead with the feasibility of Sea Club Overall Skate Show and Itaú Cup Skate, where enshrined monsters like Tony Hawk, Lance Mountain, Ken Park, Gator Mark, Mickey Alba, Mark Gonzales and Kevin Harris presented here. So, for all that, Petronio is a true warrior skateboard in Brazil!”

Alex aka Poisé
“Petronio Vilela. Speak about him? A guy who always believed in skateboarding in the 80s. I remember very well those times, great epoch, and Petronio always recording all moments in style! Be in Guará, or in all other events, I remember that Mad Rats … Finally, the master of the photos! Big hug! Sumemo.”

“Yeah Petronio! I’m just going to leave my testimony as a journalist and communicator, congratulating for his role as an agent of change in the history of skateboarding in Brazil, both for his activities as a photographer of sports as a manager of emblematic events and actions like the Brazilian championship in Guaratinguetá, Sea Club Overal Skate Show, Itaú Cup and Alternative Rock Skate. Congratulations on images and action. Hugs!”

Helga Simões
“When I first came in the historic banks of Itaguara Club in Guaratinguetá, in São Paulo, in the early 2000s, I had much in mind because the I had known about Petronio Vilela’s historical photographs, a lawyer, photographer and skater soul. But I just talked to him a few years later, when I met him in one of the also historic championships Swell Skate Camp in Viamão, in Rio Grande do Sul. We talked about the stool he used to sit on the platform of the bowl waiting for the perfect trick for the perfect click. He gave me the tip: I bought in a fishing store. Okay, I added another word for his profile: fisherman. Fisherman of images that tell the history of Brazilian skate from the beginning to where the legs hang on.”

Gisele Saad
“Great professional, partner, reconciler, friend. With his bold work, already in the 80s, he has inspired many photographers to arrive to that logistic advance and of super positions that now apply to record moments as radical, or not so much, but at least exciting (laughs). I would not say it is easy to be a photographer today, but with the current resources, the results are super diversified, full motion, effects, colors and lights. As a photographer of this unique sport – skateboarding – Petronio can transfer his glance seriously in an intriguingly, distorted and caricatured relaxed way, forward lens, revealing his serious side, but relaxed of observing the world and friends, believing and perpetuating our lifestyle with such joy and enthusiasm. ”

Renato Pinheiro
“Petronio Vilela. What can I say about this great photographer? I’m skateboarder since the 80s and at that time he already photographed for so long. He always was attentive to the competitions, the movement of skateboarding and skaters who were mainly to be emerging. In my case, in 87, the Brazilian Championship in Itaguará Country Club in Guaratinguetá, he caught me in many unforgettable moments that eternalized my life. His photos always prioritize the right moments, ie, those in which the skater is at the peak of the maneuver, whether in air, plants, slides. There he was to photograph and make the joy of us and confirm the category of a great photographer.”

Léo Kakinho – Florianópolis/SC
“Petronio is part of the history of sk8 Brazil. It was with him that I realized that the skateboard and camera go together. He is one of the heads of the history of Guaratinguetá in the skateboard world. He shot our story, my first cover, first interview, first championship poster, etc … The guy that certainly was essential to many skaters to have recognition and also have in their archives one of the most beautiful stories in the world of skateboard. Thank Petronio, to click on our history … still today (laughs). ”

Bruno Leonardo Jr – São Paulo/SP
“One of the oldest and best skate photographers coming straight from the training barn of some of the best skaters from Brazil – Guaratinguetá!”

Tai Tai Arte – Rio de Janeiro/RJ
“Probably the professional that most registered skateboarding in Brazil in the 80s, a time when it was much harder to be a photographer. He told the history of Brazilian skate through their photos, publicizing the sport through his lenses.”

“His work is even confounded with the history of Brazilian skate. And I always say that his lens captures all the magic of skateboarding and his masterful moves. ”

I have great and fond memories of his comings to here – Natal / RN, in the historic tour with Luciano KID in the 80s.”

Been following his career since the inauguration of the bowl Itaguara Country Club in 1981, skater, became producer, photographer, magazine editor and skate lawyer. Your photograph is the translation of his optical life, which gives us and shares up to the present day, to perpetuate the records of a playful and memorable. I wish many clicks ahead and thank you for your existence and Friendship!”

Thronn – Los Angeles/CA
“Petronio Vilela is one of the Brazilian skateboard minds thinking. Always back to work for the sport, he struggled to build the skate park in Itaguará, in Guaratinguetá. He is a great photographer, always with unique angles on his shooting way and owner of a legacy of images. Certainly the Brazilian skateboard owes much to him. He is also a great friend who I like very much.”

Álvaro Miranda [PORQUE?] – São Paulo/SP
“Petronio Vilela more than a great friend, he is one of the biggest supporters of Brazilian skateboarding in the 80s. He is one of the best photographers in skateboarding, in my opinion.””

“I wanted to thank Petronio for everything he has done in the past. With all the difficulties we faced in the evolution of our sport, he was always there with his camera in the events. Thanks for everything! ”

Sallada – Los Angeles/CA
“Petronio Vilela was one of the guys who gave the basis for the first generation of skateboard in Brazil. Thanks to his organizational talent, he was responsible for one of the best events in the 80s. He was part of the crowd that just built skatistic sets of Brazil at that time. Guaratinguetá was the birthplace and 80s Mecca. The events inspired the generation 90 and 2000 and raised the skate internationally. In this context, Petronio documented with all affection all these years with a collection of images that were published in all national media sport. Classic photos of magazines that marked generations came from the camera of this avid super dog that devoured championships in the Vale do Paraíba in the 70s!”

PER Canguru:
“To speak objectively about the importance and the work of photographers like Petronio is a complicated task. You need to revisit the memories and use your imagination to the real scenario that represented photographing skateboarding in the 80s. Forget any digital device, camera phones, and websites specializing in digital albums or relationship, or any similar megapixels technology. Accessibility and diversity of equipment and lenses too. The Age of Sensibility started by the photographer without miniatures on display, all captured on 35mm film that only show the result after going through the process of film development and on paper. Here, then, choose a picture among so many shots that would illustrate one of skateboarding magazines and leave many others in a file slides or negatives with the possibility of never being displayed to the public and, worse, suffer with the time to be lost.

They are pieces of the Skateboard History that should be immortalized. There were very few photographers and his work was essential to record each part of this history. It was not possible to see hundreds of lenses pointed out for a ramp or search for images on the internet. The result depended on the photographer’s knowledge, almost self-taught, because the time of a trick was not dependent on shutter speed of a camera sequence. It was unique!
From all this, which most inspired skaters like me at that time was exactly the fact of opening a national or imported magazine, watching that “moment” and often try to guess how that trick would have been made if not in a sequence. This meant that often we created different tricks to that shot, even if it had already existed somewhere because also access the videos was almost nonexistent.
I do not claim that evolution and photography technology do not have a great value for the information, I intend only to illustrate that the difficulties of that time formed professionals, and registration and skateboard testimony depended only these professionals and writers. Today anyone can buy cheap equipment or high tech that only depend on the “point and shoot” – even with good results, but it will never make a person having control of light, of shutter or of the essence of a picture. Congratulations, Petronio, by capturing such important moments in our history.”
